چکیده

The development of atherosclerosis has been studied in White Carneau and Show Racer pigeons. The results of analytical studies indicate that the disease process is characterized by the accumulation of various lipids, and especially of sterol esters and free sterols. By perfusion of arteries with blood serum or with tissue culture medium containing (214labeled acetate, significant synthesis of labeled fatty acids has been shown to occur. As the aorta becomes relatively more diseased, the synthesis of fatty acids is enhanced, and the atherosclerotic plaque itself appears to be the site of most of the synthesis. Likewise, as the aorta becomes more diseased, relatively more of the newly synthesized fatty acid becomes esterified to cholesterol. The cholesterol to which the fatty acid is esterified appears to be that which is contained within the arterial wall, and the artery appears to have the necessary enzyme systems for carrying out the esterification.

Background: Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of mortality in the developed and some developing countries. Some people believe that opium abuse has beneficial effects for reducing blood lipids and atherosclerosis prevention. In this study, the effect of oral opium addiction on lipid profile and atherogenesis in normal and hypercholesterolemic rabbits was studied. Methods: Thirty two male Newz...

Cilostazol Inhibits Accumulation of Triglyceride in Aorta and Platelet Aggregation in Cholesterol-Fed Rabbits

Cilostazol is clinically used for the treatment of ischemic symptoms in patients with chronic peripheral arterial obstruction and for the secondary prevention of brain infarction. Recently, it has been reported that cilostazol has preventive effects on atherogenesis and decreased serum triglyceride in rodent models. There are, however, few reports on the evaluation of cilostazol using atheroscl...

A comparison of the turnover and metabolism cholesterol in normal and atherosclerotic monkey aortas.

Rhesus monkeys were fed high cholesterol and cholesterol-free diets for 21-24 months. The animals were then given isotopic cholesterol intravenously and autopsied from 1 to 51 weeks later. The plasma and aortic cholesterol contents were 633 +/- 130 mg/dl and 35.6 +/- 11.4 mg/g dried tissue (45.5% in ester form) for atherosclerotic monkeys and 135 +/- 25 mg/dl and 9.9 +/- 3.6 mg/g (15.0% in este...

Atherosclerosis-Susceptible and Atherosclerosis-Resistant Pigeon Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells Express Different Genes and Proteins in vitro

This review describes theories of human atherogenesis and experimental results evaluating gene or protein expression in the pigeon model for spontaneous atherosclerosis. The spontane‐ ous disease in the pigeon differentiates from other animal models that require manipulation (genetic, nutritional, environmental) to induce the disease state. Both susceptible and resistant pigeons have been studi...

Chronic inhibition of nitric oxide production accelerates neointima formation and impairs endothelial function in hypercholesterolemic rabbits.

To determine if endogenous local levels of nitric oxide (NO) modulate atherogenesis, we studied the effect of inhibiting NO with NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) on early neointima formation in cholesterol-fed rabbits. Male rabbits were fed for 5 weeks with a 0.5% cholesterol diet alone or treated in addition during the last 4 weeks with L-NAME (12 mg/kg per day SC) via osmotic minipum...
